Week #64: Fifteen Months
This week I hit my fifteen month mark. I'm starting to feel an
impending sense of doom....but in all reality, I'm mostly just not
thinking about it.

This week has been pretty normal. We had exchanges on Tuesday! Sister
Finn and I stayed in Fairway Village and had a ton of fun! Since she's
served in Fairway Village before, we ended up having a great
conversation with Sister Schott that night. (PS Sister Schott is the
bomb!) Tuesday ended up being a super crazy day. We had a zone blitz-
so we all went to the Prune Hill ward and helped them find people for
an hour or so. Then we met with Katrina and she is doing awesome! And,
as we were leaving, we ran into the Hermanas in the same complex and
they were on exchanges too, and Sister Twitchell (who I replaced in
Fairway Village) was there with Hermana Magnum! So the members who
were picking us up invited them to dinner with us. There were four
sisters, and none of us were with our assigned companions! I love
exchanges.
We had interviews with President McAteer on Thursday! That was a lot of fun. We got there and then got a text that they were running half
an hour behind. So we decided (us and the two sisters we were with) to
go out to lunch...to the Chick Fil A that recently opened! My first
Chick Fil A in fifteen months. And when we walked outside, it was
pouring. Good ol' Pacific Northwest weather. And there was a Relief
Society activity- square dancing! And a professional caller came. It
was really neat! And there were Dutch oven desserts.
On Friday, we had some awesome weekly planning, and then some stop
boys. We met this lady named Sarah- she was really interesting! She
was very nice too. She invited us in and gave us cider, and Sister
Sitala was cold so she gave her a long sleeved shirt, a sweater, and a
pair of jeans. It was pretty fun. And then we got to meet with a new
investigator that Sister Sitala found on exchanges! She is really
neat. We had an awesome lesson!
On Saturday we helped Sister Schott clean her garage- she's still
recovering from a ruptured Achilles' tendon- and then she made us
BLTs! We dropped by a ton of people and then we had dinner with Iva (she got baptized last year) and she took us to a super awesome pizza place! And from there we went to the adult session of stake conference at the stake center. It was so good! And afterwards Iva got some ice cream and we ate it at Sister Schott's.
On Sunday we had the General session of stake conference, and it was
awesome too. They broadcast it to our building. Two missionaries who
are preparing to leave spoke. And President and Sister McAteer too-
together! They stood at the microphone next to each other and told
their conversion story. Then we went to the Hiltons to borrow some
white Christmas lights for Katrina's wedding and then had to test all
of them....and we had FHE with Fernando that evening as well. It was a
good day!
This morning I read a good quote in an article by Richard G Scott
("Gifts of the Spirit," February 2002). He was talking about the gift
of charity and striving to develop it and he said "Never make someone
have to choose between your ways and the Lord’s ways. And always make
sure that you’re making it easier to live God’s commandments for those
who are by your side and who are your friends. Then you will
understand whether you have charity."
I love this quote! It is
something I want to continue to strive to do. Sister Sitala and I were
talking this morning and I was thinking about how every time I've
wanted to not follow a rule or not work hard or whatever, it's out of
selfishness. But when I do want to work hard, etc, it's because I care
about the people around me. So that was an interesting thing to
realize! Just something to think about. I invite you to strive to
become more charitable this week!
Love you all!

Week #63: The Anti-Climatic Typhoon
Hello from the rainy Northwest!
This week has been pretty wild, and also a ton of fun. Right now,
we're headed up to the Ape Caves for a hike- hopefully by the time we
get WiFi I'll have some fun pictures to send!
On Monday night we had an amazing Family Home Evening with the Boyd kids at the Johnsons' house! They also invited the Primary teachers of the other kids. They got along so well with the other kids who were there! And we had an amazing lesson- the Spirit was really there. The Boyd kids are amazing.
We saw Angie on Tuesday morning. She's been meeting with the
missionaries for a while. She is super sweet! We also were the Cookie
Monsters- we make cookies with Mama Hobbs (a sister in the ward) and
then drop them off at various members' houses. It's a lot of fun!
On Wednesday, we had our zone meeting which was a lot of fun. Our zone is really chill, and everyone gets along really well.
We saw the Boyd kids again on Friday- they're so fun! And they came to church again on Sunday. They are just soaking everything up, and the
ward has just enveloped them and taken them in. They fit in perfectly! This ward's really good about reaching out to everyone.
Also on Friday we found out that Elder Anderson was not coming for mission conference after all- apparently there was a typhoon somewhere
and the remnants of it were headed straight for us. So we ended up actually getting told to stay in Saturday morning because it was supposed to be so bad. Well a few hours later we were told we could go out again and that the storm had changed course. It actually even got sunny! So that was our disappointing typhoon. But we did carve
pumpkins during the time that we were inside!
Sister Sitala had nevergotten to carve a pumpkin before, and she did an awesome jack-o-lantern. It was a ton of fun.
Church on Sunday was awesome! The Boyds came again and loved it. We
have 1pm church here, which is a first for me, and it's really odd
because by the time we get out of church, the day is mostly over! We
had dinner with Nasy Chan, who is a member of the ward, and some of
her family. She made some really good food- and enough of it to feed
an army! She kept bringing more out! There was stir fry, crab, rice,
salad, potstickers, Cambodian Jello and Cambodian dessert- kind of
like large coconut tapioca- and some sticky rice roll things and soda,
and there was large amounts of everything. It was so good! She sent
some home with us too.
The Ape Caves were pretty bomb today! (We are driving home right now). It was really pretty, but also really dark- I definitely did not prepare adequately for that. My lights were not very bright and one is kind of dying. So I stuck close to our group and eventually borrowed an extra light. There was one part where there was a five or six foot
ledge we had to all get up- that was fun. And lots of rocks to climb over! Then on the walk back we had to cross a river but the path was flooded so we used some trees that had fallen across. All in all, a lot of fun, and definitely tiring. A good exercise in zone unity, for sure! We have a really good zone.
On that note, the experience I had today with my lights proving inadequate reminded me of a conference talk from October 2015 by Vern
P Stanfill called "Choose The Light." In it, he told of a similar experience biking through a dark tunnel and having to temporarily rely on a friend's light.
He said "In our lives, the extended hand of the Savior may take the form of help from a trusted friend, leader, or loving parent. While we are struggling in the darkness, there is nothing wrong with relying temporarily upon the light of those who love us and have our best interests at heart." I love this quote! It was important for me, in order to be safe climbing over large rocks, to rely on the brighter lights of those around me. Similarly, when it feels like we are spiritually lost in darkness, it is important to
know that we can temporarily rely on the light of others until we get our own feet back under us. Then we can continue on our own. Once I had a light in my own hand, I could go forward more confidently and no longer needed to rely on others.
I love you all! Have an amazing week!

Week #62: Expect the Unexpected
Aloha!
This week has been a good one. We got a call last Tuesday, the day
before transfers, and one of the assistants to the president informed me that I would not be going to St Helens but actually to the Fairway Village ward in the Vancouver East stake. So I am no longer in Oregon! But the Mountain View ward is right across the street, and a few
people I knew there have actually moved into this ward, so I was able to find some familiar faces. So far, this ward has been absolutely
amazing.
The members here are incredible and super willing to help
out. My companion, Sister Sitala, has been out three months so she
just finished getting trained. Oh, and we are biking! This is my
first time biking on my mission- I feel like a full fledged missionary
now. So we have a balance between walking, getting rides, and biking.
We have some awesome people that we are working with- Katrina, who is
engaged to a less active member, will be married in November and then
baptized a few days later! She is really neat. She has two amazing
kids also. And then we are meeting with the Boyd family- their mom is
a member but the kids hadn't ever really been to church. But they came
yesterday! We dropped by about an hour and a half before church and
their mom dropped them off, then we found them a ride home. Everyone
in the ward loved them! They are good kids.
We live with Sister Schott- she is awesome. She has two dogs, Jasper
and Desi, and also a piano :)
We had an awesome ward activity on Saturday morning- they did the
"ward Olympics" so there were all kinds of fun games. We even
participated a little bit. It was pretty awesome!
Other than that...I still am working on getting everyone's names down.
But they are amazing!
This week I've been thinking a lot about humility. We had a great discussion with Sister Schott this morning about taking responsibility or credit for our good choices, and about relying on the Lord. This is
something I've struggled to understand my whole life. As I've studied on my mission, I've come to believe that there is a balance but that it also is completely different than what the world would think.
Humility, I've found, is not ragging on ourselves. It isn't refusing to be proud of anything we've done. It isn't passively just following wherever the Lord leads.
Humility to me means understanding His plan, understanding His mercy and how He has made every good thing in my life possible, and then taking what He has given me and actively participating in my life.
It means making decisions and seeking His guidance. It means understanding that His will is best, and choosing
to follow it because I know He loves me. It is active, deliberate, and disciplined. Humility to me is understanding that it's okay to be proud of good things I have done, as long as they do not make me prideful. I am proud that I came on a mission, that I chose to follow where God was leading me, because I have learned so much. I still have so far to go, but I have also come a long way and that is good! So humility to me is understanding He knows best and seeking His
direction, but also acting confidently and moving forward boldly because I know He is with me, and on those days when I'm doing my best, I can be confident that I am doing His will. Humility means not being hesitant or afraid because He has told me where I need to go. So it's really one of the most beautiful principles of the gospel.
Love you all! Have an amazing week!

"The cutest little sister!"
My name is Denise Hobbs and I love the sister missionaries and we just got the cutest little sister!! I helped with transfers today and so I got to be with her most of the day today... her comps name is sister Sitala and they are in the fairway village ward in Vancouver Washington in the Vancouver east stake... she came over for dinner cuz I was in the car when their dinner appointment cancelled... she is a very sweet gal- who I love already!!! Just wanted to share a picture with she and sister Sitala at my house.... the missionaries call me Mama Hobbs as I do lots for them and I love them !!! Have a great night!!!
Week #61: Another Week, Another Transfer
This email will probably be pretty short- I've got a nasty cold and so my brain isn't up to 100% yet.
We found out about transfers this week! And both of us are leaving. We were pretty sad. Sister Frisch is going to the Mountain View Ward!! I've been telling her all about it. And I am going to the St Helens 1st Ward. It will be awesome! I'm so excited- a lot of the missionaries in my district are ones I've served around before. And my mom will be in the same apartment as me! (Sister Girot- my trainer). And it's her last transfer which is crazy.
This week has been very interesting. We had an awesome district meeting- President and Sister McAteer came! They surprised us. It was a ton of fun. And the Spirit was super strong.
On Wednesday, Sherry was able to meet Bishop and after she met him, the Spirit testified to her that she needed to get baptized soon! So she wants to try to come to church.
On Thursday we had an awesome district service project. We set up
temporary walls for an art festival that was going on this weekend. It
was a lot of fun- I got to draw the blueprints of where the walls went
so that they have it for next year. That was a ton of fun.
General conference was amazing! We watched a session with Brian, Lori
and the Nordstroms (and another one with just the Nordstroms), one
with Sister Dover, and one with the Bowens. It was so powerful! I felt
like the speakers were very bold and testified of the simple things
that we can apply in our lives to ward off temptation. I loved Elder
Cornish and Elder Schmutz's talks- I felt like they were really
powerful in both offering comfort that even in the crazy world we live
in, things will end up okay, but also testifying of the path we need
to follow.
We've also spent a lot of time saying goodbye to people and getting things ready for the new sisters coming in! They will have a lot of miracles happening.
I love you all- have an amazing week!

Week #60 Meeting Lots of People
This week was really amazing, and really interesting. We saw so many
instances of the Lord putting us in the right place at the right
moment. And we were able to find a lot of new people! Because of the
move, we're working a lot more on the other side of our area, and
we've seen so many miracles.
One morning we were walking down a street, meeting people, and we decided to go and knock on this door where a member used to live and this woman opens the door and she's on the phone and crying. She says "Sorry it isn't a good time" and closes the door. So we decided we needed to leave a note and so we did and just as we were going to walk away, she opens the door and apologizes for being rude (which she wasn't at all) and tells us what's going on and we just had no idea what to say. But she said we could come check on her in a while so we will probably invite her and her kids to the Halloween activity.
We also met this cool guy named Jim who is an expert at golf and the five-string banjo. He played a little for us, and it was amazing! And we just had an awesome conversation about music and missionary work-he encouraged me to learn to play by ear instead of just with sheet music, which really would be cool.
Another day, we were walking through an apartment complex and we see Abrielle! She and her dad came to the ice cream social way back but we hadn't seen her in a while. The funniest part- she doesn't even live in that complex. She was just out on the balcony right as we walked past- she was at a friend's house. So that was amazing!
On Sunday night, we were walking through a different apartment complex and two kids ask us for help. They have a dog with them, who escaped from one of the other apartments, but the owner wasn't home so they were hoping to find someone to watch the dog. We aren't sure what to
do so we go to a member's apartment and they aren't sure either but one of them grabs a jump rope and proposes we tie the dog to a tree near their apartment. Well, we get the dog on the jump rope and we're walking to the apartment it came from, and we've made it maybe 100 yards and this car pulls up and it's the owner! So that was perfect. So we returned the jump rope.
Then, today, we're going shopping, and we pull up into a parking spot and this car pulls around us....and it's the Bowens! We haven't heard anything back form them for a while am it was perfect that they were there. The funny part- we were late going shopping because the other sisters were late coming back form a meeting because they got stuck
behind an accident. So it was definitely God's plan.
Sherry watched the women's session of conference with us too! And it was so powerful. If you get a chance to watch it, do it! It was
amazing. One of my favorite thoughts came from Sister Bingham's talk-she said "share positive things about others and let the less-than-perfect fade away." I love that. I loved her thoughts on
charity and on looking out for others. That, I think, is the best way to encourage people to become better is to focus on the good and on
what they do well.
So my challenge to you this week is to look for the positive in everyone around you, including yourself! And like Sister Bingham said,
"the less-than-perfect [will] fade away."
Love you all! Have an amazing week!
